Ethernet Recording

10 Gigabit Ethernet Recording

Conduant records a 10 Gigabit Ethernet stream to disk at full line rate, continuously, with no dropped packets. The capture arrives as a finished system, so there is no acquisition software to write and nothing to assemble.

  • Line-rate capture of 10 Gigabit Ethernet with no dropped packets
  • Nothing to write, the system records out of the box
  • Continuous write to removable NVMe, so a long capture offloads fast
  • Peer to peer PCI Express, with no host in the data path

The real alternative

A server with a fast NIC drops packets

The obvious way to record Ethernet is a server with a fast network card and a stack of SSDs. At sustained 10 Gigabit line rate it drops packets, because the operating system and the file system decide when to pause, and a pause at line rate is lost packets. A recorder built around the rate writes the stream straight to disk with nothing in the path to stall it.

The OS pauses when it chooses

A general-purpose stack pauses to service other work, and at 10 Gigabit every pause is packets on the floor.

The write has to be continuous

Recording Ethernet for a long run needs an unbroken write, which a file system managing its own housekeeping cannot promise.

Capture software is a project of its own

Writing a line-rate packet capture application is weeks of work before the first clean capture. A finished recorder skips that entirely.

The system

StreamStor® Cobra Recording System

One platform records it. The Cobra takes the 10 Gigabit Ethernet stream and writes it continuously to removable NVMe over a peer to peer PCI Express path, with no host or file system in the way to introduce a gap. The system records out of the box.

  • Records out of the box, with no capture software to build
  • Wrap mode holds a rolling window for a long capture
  • Removable NVMe offloads fast between runs
  • The SDK covers .NET, C#, C++, C, LabVIEW, and MATLAB, and the system runs commanded over a network link

Why a dedicated recorder holds a rate a server cannot is covered on the high-speed data recording page. Full configurations sit with the Cobra specifications, and capacity options with the storage and drive modules.

Why Conduant

Built and supported in Longmont, Colorado

Conduant has built recording systems since 1996, with hundreds of installations behind it. Design, build, and support happen in the same building, and the engineer who designed a system answers the phone about it.

  • Records out of the box. Ethernet capture runs on delivery, with no acquisition software to build.
  • Tested at rate before it ships. Assembled, run at the rate it was ordered for, and verified in Longmont before it ships.
  • Line rate with no dropped packets. The write path is built around the rate, so a long capture stays continuous.
  • Reach the engineer who built it. Support goes to the design team, with no ticket queue and no forced contract.
  • Custom builds in as little as 30 days. When the standard configuration does not fit, Conduant builds to the requirement.
  • Made and supported in the United States. Systems are engineered, assembled, and serviced in Longmont, Colorado, by US-based engineers.
FAQ

Common questions

Can I record 10 Gigabit Ethernet to disk at line rate?

Yes. The system writes a 10 Gigabit Ethernet stream continuously to disk at full line rate, with no dropped packets. The stream moves peer to peer over PCI Express to removable NVMe, so nothing in the path stalls the write.

Do I need to write capture software?

No. The system records out of the box. There is no acquisition application to build, which is often weeks of work on a roll-your-own setup before the first clean capture.

Why not use a server with a fast network card?

At sustained 10 Gigabit line rate a general-purpose server drops packets, because the operating system and file system pause to service other work and a pause at line rate loses packets. A recorder built around the rate writes straight to disk with nothing to stall it.

Where does the recorded data go?

The stream writes to removable NVMe storage modules, so a long capture holds continuously and offloads fast between runs. Capacity is configured to the length of the capture.
